TST 7/31: Michael Head, Jr. Memorial
|
The Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series will head to the tradition rich Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Alabama on Saturday July 31st for the 13th Annual Michael Head, Jr. Memorial.
The 54-lap / $5400 to win affair pays tribute to the late son of 1991 Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series Champion Mike Head of Ellenwood, Georgia. Michael Head was tragically murdered in April of 1997 in suburban Atlanta. The annual fundraiser at the 1/3 mile red clay oval track, dubbed The Hornet's Nest, benefits the Kayla Head Trust Fund. Kayla is Michael's daughter.
Defending race winner Tim Busha of Boaz, AL captured his first ever Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series victory at this same event in 2009 in an exciting fashion after starting ninth and getting by Neil Baggett of Shannon...

Phillip Swofford, of Bremen, is the new leasee and promoter at West Georgia Speedway in Whitesburg. He's already at work on a track facelift, painting everything and upgrading the bathrooms.
Swofford has been involved with sportsman class racing in recent years, and his McKenzie Auto Parts has had a parts trailer at area tracks for the past two years.
He's making West Georgia into a Friday night track, and will have divisions and rules similar to Saturday night at nearby Senoia: late models, mod minis, hobby, B-cadet, pur mini, and enduro street stocks. He hopes to include a crate class too.
West Georgia was the loser when Senoia went to dirt this year. A low fan and car count led to a cut in the purse one Sat. night. The next we...

Fundraiser: A Head For A Cure
|
Thank you for visiting www.AHead4ACure.com!
A Head For A Cure is a Non-Profit Organization, which was established in 2010 by myself Jeep Van Wormer and my wife Angie. It was started in hopes of uniting the Dirt Late Model community together in the fight against cancer. This whole idea evolved when I was in Australia racing in the winter of 2009 and was approached to shave my head to raise money for cancer. In only an hour, over $3,000.00 was raised for charity from the fans at the racetrack and several of us drivers obliged in shaving our heads.
We are kicking off our Brave the Shave campaign on June 10-12, 2010 at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio during the 'Dream 100' weekend. Twenty-one generous drivers have agreed to get their head shaved during the 'World 100' weekend o...

Reported by Motorsports Network: Bruton’s up to his old tricks. Having problems with an excessive bill from the Sheriff in Loudon, NH, Bruton is openly suggesting that he might pull one of the races at that facility. The last time Bruton had a hissy fit, he threatened to move Charlotte Motor Speedway out of the county. This is a high end game of poker, complete with bluffing and aggressive betting. At this point, though, I wouldn’t bet too much on the Sherriff’s position.
Updated by A Fan's View by S.D. Grady: So, when I read the headlines on Friday, my immediate reaction to Smith’s rather belligerent statement was that SMI finally found a way to take that race away from New Hampshire and have somebody else to put the blame on when they do...

RODERICK ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO 2010 PLANS
DAWSONVILLE, Ga. (June 7, 2010) - Casey Roderick, the up-and coming driver
from Lawrenceville, Ga., who is part of Bill Elliott's Driver Development
program, is leaving his Late Model racing behind and putting all his focus
on big track racing. His change of plans means his next outing will be in
the ARCA race at Iowa Speedway July 10.
Elliott and Roderick made the decision to concentrate on what Elliott
believes it will take to move Roderick into the next level of his career.
"We need to focus all of our energy right now on ARCA," said Elliott.
"Casey will be 18 in August, and we will be taking another big step, moving
on to bigger race tracks to gain the necessary experience for approval to

GA's Clint Smith Hopes To End Long World of Outlaws Late Model Series Win Drought At Swainsboro Raceway On Saturday Night (May 1)
Maybe a World of Outlaws Late Model Series event in Clint Smith's home state will be the tonic he needs to bust out of a frustrating victory drought.
Smith, 45, of Senoia, Ga., couldn't pick a better place to snap a nearly two-year-long winless streak on the national tour than Swainsboro Raceway, which hosts the WoO LMS for the first time ever this Saturday night (May 1).
"I'd love to get it done at Swainsboro," said Smith, who is winless in his last 78 starts on a series that he has followed as a regular since 2004. "We don't get a chance to run Outlaw shows close to the house very often, so we're looki...

Travis Pennington, the unjustly jailed young racing star, has been transferred to the Irwin County jail in south Georgia. Hopefully the move won't affect his support team of family, fans, and friends, but it is now 220 miles each way for the allowed one-hour weekly visits.
Jeffry Scott, in the The Atlanta Journal-Constitution 4/22, has a long story about the Georgia teens who are being trapped by harsh laws and youthful stupidity. Former DeKalb DA J. Tom Morgan, who has shown an interest in Pennington's case, is quoted. http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta-schools-parents-and-482243.html

Travis Pennington, the 19-year-old son of Dirt Racing Hall of Fame member Jack Pennington, of Douglasvillle, GA, was convicted of Statutory Rape in Douglas County Superior Court Mar. 11, and sentenced to 10 years in prison by Judge David T. Emerson.
According to a the District Attorney, about three years ago a 12-year-old girl reported the crime, and gave a video-taped statement. The DA said the victim’s family and the defendant’s family were friends and it was not uncommon for the victim to be at the defendant’s home.

Venerable North Georgia Speedway, a dirt-track racer favorite for decades, is under new management and partners Timmy Millwood and Tom Peters, both with racing experience, are promising more races and a more fan-friendly environment.
Anything would be better than the Monty Morrow-directed operation over the past couple of years. Morrow, who also promotes the Cleveland (Tenn.) Speedway, almost destroyed the Chatsworth operation. Morrow had only five or six races at North Georgia last spring and summer. Fans and drivers are sure to welcome Millwood and Peters with open arms.
A 26-race schedule is in place and will get under way Saturday. Gates will open at 5 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30 p.m. Adm. $10.

"I fear failure more than I want to win." - Rick Hendrick
It's been 25 seasons since the Southern All-Stars Dirt Racing Series has raced at Boyd’s Speedway. In 1984, B.J. Parker brought two events to the track, formerly known as Tennessee-Georgia Speedway. Both events were won by Mississippi racing legend and Hall of Famer Jerry Inmon. Taking victories in Columbus, MS, and Talladega, AL, Inmon would also go on to win the 1984 Southern All Stars Championship. That would be the last time the series would sanction an event in Chattanooga.
Friday Boyd’s Speedway will host a $4,000 to-win S.A.S. (40 lap) event. In addition to the Late Model event, Boyd’s Speedway will offer racing in Steel Head Late Models, A&B Hobby, and Front Whe...

|
More than $170,000 in prize money will be up for grabs when the 27th-Annual World Crown 300 takes the green flag at Gresham Motorsports Park Thursday-Sunday, November 11-14, 2010.
Topping the list will be a $20,000 first-place prize to the winner of the prestigious 300-lap event which this year will feature the return of the Super Late Models as the headline division. According to Gresham Motorsports Park General Manager Dan Elliott, the Sunday November 14 battle on the ultra-fast GMP half-mile oval will be a supreme test for the high-flying Super Late Models.
"Whoever wins this year's World Crown 300 is really going to earn their money," said Elliott. "We're not only paying $20,000 to win, but we're also paying $1,250 to start. That kind of money, along with the opportunity ...
